Zero is nothing

Zero does not exist as a physical thing. It is a symbol used to express absence, emptiness, or a point of balance. Yet without zero, mathematics would break down, especially when dealing with place value, equations, and negative numbers.

Positive numbers express quantities that exist, or could hypothetically exist. Zero marks the absence of quantity, or the point at which nothing has been added or taken away. Negative numbers go further: they do not describe impossible things, but quantities below zero, deficits, debts, opposites, or values measured in the other direction. They are mathematical shadows, allowing us to balance, compare, and measure what is lacking against what is present.
